The Kincardine U14G Meridian team traveled once again to Walkerton for a "home game" against Harriston Legion on Wednesday, June 24. It was a scorching night with no breeze to be found.
The team had five call-ups this week: Megan Stewart-Kemp, Maddie Duncan, Ashley Boyd, Jorie Elliott and Casey Brindley. Kincardine spent most of the first half in Harriston's end. Emily MacLennan had multiple fantastic corner kicks but Meridian failed to convert. Meridian did, however, put one home on a boot by Emily from Victoria Krulicki in a goal crease scramble. Meridian scored again to make it 2-0 on a low blast by Melissa Boyle into the right side of the goal. Casey Brindley completed the first half with a shut-out.
The second half was much more evenly played. Ashley Boyd was now in goal and had numerous strong kicks. Halfway through the second half Harriston scored to make the game 2-1. Five minutes later Melissa scored again off a rebound by Cassidy Colhoun to regain Kincardine's two goal advantage. But once again Harriston scored to pull within one goal. Meibh deRosenroll made a number of strong clearing kicks to keep Harriston out of Meridian's end and Laura Mangotich's fancy footwork helped keep the ball up field.
Meridian's forwards and midfield began to show their deft passing skills and just missed scoring on numerous occasions, especially Caelyn Nashiem whose hard pursuit of the ball gave her a number of scoring opportunities. Finally, persistance paid off when Cassidy Colhoun blasted the ball into the net on a passing play which went from Casey to Maddie to Melissa to Cassidy.
There was great defensive play by Jorie Elliott, Lindsey Gossell, and Chelsea van den Hogen. Also, wonderful midfield play by Megan Stewart-Kemp and Maddie Duncan. Emily MacLennan was the standout of the game!
The girls all had fun again and put forth an excellent effort on a very hot night!
