The storm clouds had cleared off, and the sun was shining brightly with just a delicate hint of raw sewage as the Band in Black, Colhoun Family Chiropractic, took to the pitch against the Grey shirts of the CUSW team.
The Black shirts didn’t waste any time, getting some early pressure in the CUSW end when Ryan Gowland lobbed a sweet ball to Jacob Bishop at the top of the box. Jacob used his head, literally, as he deflected the ball to Ben Imbaquingo, who fired it just wide of the CUSW net.
CUSW bounced back as their defence cleared the ball well up field, and that gave them some space as they moved into the attacking zone. A sharp pass to a striker out front resulted in a shot that beat our keeper, and put the Grey shirts up 1-0.
Everett Luinstra made the most of a great pass from Alexandra Thorn and got a good shot away, but the CUSW keeper snatched it up before it could cross the line.
Another great clearing effort by the CUSW defence led to a dangerous shot on net, but Ariel Luinstra used some quick hands to snatch the ball out of danger. Moments later, James Adams would make a solid defensive play, breaking up a chance for the Grey shirts, and getting the ball back up toward centre, where it was picked up by Emma Swift. Emma dodged a CUSW player, and threaded the ball to Alex. Alex moved the ball quickly over to Ben, who broke in on the keeper with Jacob Bishop. Ben used Jacob as a decoy, and hammered the ball into the twine to tie the game at 1-1.
The goal seemed to spur the Band in Black on, as soon after they tied it up, Alyssa McAllister cut off a dangerous striker on the Grey shirts, and the ball was cleared to Travis Leschied. Travis turned on the jets, and got by a few of the CUSW players before passing the ball over to Katie McTiernan. Katie drew a crowd to her, and then popped the ball over to Jacob Bishop who sent a rocket into the back of the net, putting Colhoun up 2-1.
The defensive tandem of James Adams and Carson Stevenson worked well in front of Ariel, as James made a big block at the top of the box, and then Carson cleared the ball up the field to take the pressure off as the halftime whistle blew.
The second half saw storm clouds rolling in, a sign of things to come as the CUSW team jumped on the ball right off the kick off. A sharp pass resulted in Kendon Zettle letting a bullet go that deflected off the post and in to tie the game again at 2-2.
Throw ins would be the key to victory in the second half, as Ryan Gowland placed a perfect throw onto Jacob’s foot. Jacob chipped the ball to the front of the net where a waiting Ben Imbaquingo was more than happy to put the ball home, giving the Colhoun team what would prove to be the winning goal at 3-2. Time was running down, and both teams exchanged chances in the balanced match, but when lightning flashed in the western sky, the ref called the game, resulting in a 3-2 win for Colhoun Family Chiropractic.
