A foul wind was blowing across the pitches in Kincardine on Wednesday night as the Band in Black, the Colhoun Chiropractic U10 squad faced the Tiverton Thunder. Would the unsettled weather and odour of raw sewage derail the 4-0 start put up by the Colhoun team? Fans would just have to hold their breath and see.
The Colhoun squad got to work early, as an early kick into their end was moved well by Travis Leschied from the defensive end into the Tiverton zone. Ryan Gowland showed great field sense, and moved the ball ahead to Jacob Bishop. Jacob and Ben Imbaquingo then kicked it into high gear, and after passing the ball back and forth, whistled a great ball just over the net. Moments later a handball call on Tiverton just outside the box gave Colhoun a free kick. Ryan Gowland let a howitzer fly that sailed into the net over the keeper’s outstretched hands, but the referee waved off the goal as the free kick was to be and indirect kick in his view, meaning it could not go directly into the net. Despite and outcry from the Colhoun fans, the goal was not counted, and play continued.
The Band in Black shook off the questionable call, and kept to the game plan of passing the ball and attacking as a team. The striker line of Ryan, Jacob and Ben would put on a passing show again, and this time Ben Imbaquingo would cap the rush by bending the twine and putting Colhoun up 1-0.
On the ensuing kickoff by Tiverton, the strikers got around our defense and got a hard shot on net, but Ariel Luinstra was ready for it, and stopped the rush cold. Ariel cleared the ball up to Travis Leschied, who moved the ball to Ryan. Ryan drew a number of defenders to him before letting a solid shot go through the crowd, but the Tiverton keeper was positioned well and made the stop. Tiverton then changed goalies, and the new keeper was properly welcomed to the game when Ben and Jacob broke in. The passing was sharp again, and opened a shooting lane for Jacob, who hammered the ball home to put the Colhoun squad up 2-0.
A high kick from the Tiverton keeper was headed brilliantly by Everett Luinstra, who moved the ball out of danger. Tiverton came back hard though, and got another shot through from just outside the top of the box. Ariel came up with a solid save and smothered any rebound to prevent Tiverton from getting on the board.
With time winding down in the first half, Ben and Jacob teamed up again for a fast rush, and again passing the ball opened up the field, allowing Jacob to bend the twine for his second of the game, and putting Colhoun up 3-0 at the half.
The second half saw more of the great team work shown by Colhoun in the first. Everett and Travis hit a number of solid headers, and were moving the ball well. Alexandra Thorn and Alyssa McAllister teamed up as strikers to get more pressure in the Tiverton end, but were stymied by the keeper before they could finish their rush with a goal. Carson Stevenson had his feet under him tonight, and made use of some timely kicks to break up a dangerous rush from Tiverton.
Everett Luinstra was in the right place at the right time and was moved into the open with some great passing by James Adams and Ryan Gowland. Everett opened up the motor, and ran in on the goal, burying the ball in the mesh with Colhoun’s fourth unanswered goal. Moments later, Ben Imbaquingo would notch his second of the game, making it 5-0.
James Adams cut off a dangerous Tiverton striker at midfield, and moments later as he went up to make a header attempt of his own, took a Tiverton knee to his chest as the players battled for the ball. James went down hard, and it was a scary few moments for his parents and team mates, but he would leave the pitch under his own power. Colhoun kept up the pressure, and Everett Luinstra got another great shot off on an indirect free kick through a crowd, but the Tiverton keeper made a great save and kept the ball from crossing the line. Alyssa McAllister knows exactly how it felt, as moments later the keeper would pounce on a nice chance she had inside the box. Jacob had a great rush end with a rattled goalpost, and Alexandra just missed the net after a great set up pass from Ryan. Ryan came digging hard for the ball again in the Tiverton end, and tried to pass the ball out front, but a Tiverton wall formed up fairly quickly. Ryan was persistent, and shot a great ball into the Tiverton net to make it 6-0.
Everett would close out the game scoring with his second of the game, giving the Colhoun team a 7-0 victory over Tiverton, and keeping their 2010 record unblemished at 5-0.
