It was easy to mistake Kincardine for Johannesburg, South Africa on Wednesday night. The temperature was soaring, the pitches were lined with fans, and some great soccer action was taking place.
The Band in Black, Colhoun Family Chiropractic, took to the pitch against the InStyle squad in their first meeting of the season. With Coach Imbaquingo called away, Mr. Bishop stepped up to run the sidelines for Colhoun. Our coach wasn’t the only key element missing from the team tonight, as a number of our regular players were away on summer holidays, so we looked to our development system tonight, and called up young Owen Thorn, brother of Alexandra, to join the Band and help keep our lines running fresh.
Ryan Gowland and Jacob Bishop liked up early, and moved the ball deep into the InStyle end. The early pressure just missed paying off as the ball sent by Jacob sailed just over the crossbar. Alexandra Thorn had a nose for the net as well, and whistled one just past the outside of the net after a great pass from Emma Swift gave her some open field. The play was centered in the InStyle end for a good portion of the early going, and eventually the nice ball control by Colhoun would pay off when Jacob jumped on a ball as it popped free from a melee, and put it into the back of the InStyle goal to give the Band in Black the 1-0 lead.
InStyle came back hard though, and some hard work and tenacity by Amelia Arciszewski resulted in her scoring the tying goal at 1-1. Striker Jamie Brock of the InStyle squad then had a dangerous chance in the Colhoun box, but keeper Ariel Luinstra came out and challenged hard, pouncing on the ball before Brock could get set. The back and forth play continued, and halftime was a welcome break for both sides.
The second half saw play open up, and Travis Leschied was on top of his ball control tonight, moving around defenders and passing the ball up to the Colhoun strikers with precision. Alyssa McAllister capitalized on one of Leschied’s passes, and moved the ball into the InStyle box to Everett Luinstra. Despite hard work from both strikers, the InStyle defense stood tall, and turned our chance away cold.
The Colhoun squad wouldn’t be denied though, and more hard work from Katie McTiernan and Everett Luinstra moved the ball ahead to Jacob Bishop, who notched his second of the game to put the Band in Black up 2-1.
Young Owen Thorn got in on the action with a sharp pass to Jacob, who rocketed another ball over the crossbar, followed by Everett Luinstra’s shot going just wide. They settled things down though, and it would again be Owen Thorn threading the ball ahead to Jacob, who shot up the sideline and labeled the ball to the far lower corner, completing his hat trick and putting the Band up 3-1.
InStyle was still moving with speed despite the heat, and Amelia Arciszewski broke in again on Ariel, but Ariel stood stall, smothering the shot in her midsection and then covering up to prevent any rebounds.
Ryan Gowland sent a strong clearing kick up the field, right to the top of the InStyle box, where Jacob pounced on it and drove home his fourth of the night, making it 4-1. Emma Swift broke up a quick rush with a clearing kick that relieved some pressure.
Amelia Arciszewski was a girl on a mission though, and jumped on a throw in and went digging into the Colhoun end. She stuck with it, and put the ball past Ariel to bring the InStyle squad within 2 at 4-2. Owen Thorn, who was excited to be playing up with the U10s, then jumped for joy in the Colhoun box, but his timing was off, and it resulted in a penalty shot being awarded to InStyle for a handball. Jamie Brock made no mistake, and brought his team within one goal at 4-3, but that was as close as they would come as time ran out, and Colhoun Family Chiropractic walked off the pitch with their league leading 7th victory in a row. Excellent work guys!
