It is often said that a game of soccer cannot happen without a referee, which is partially true as it is part of Soccer Canada Law, however, a game of soccer really only needs some players and a ball right? In the sense of fun and recreation you can absolutely have a game of soccer without a referee, in fact, you can play a game without parents, coaches, or even lines painted on the field!

Let's say you were to start your own league without any referees; you would find that not everyone agrees on the rules on every play. Some disagreements are minor and others more critical to the outcome of the game, but ultimately if you want the new soccer league of yours to thrive and be enjoyed by those who play in it, you will need to change something.

How would you resolve these cases where there's a disagreement between teams on what the call should be? Would it be best to have the two captains get together every single play and make a decision they both agree on? What if they can't decide on something, do we play Rock, Paper, Scissors to decide who's right? Maybe that would work for games that involve a few disagreements but it would be very time consuming and likely would not result in an enjoyable experience.

Instead of having members of each team trying to work together, you decide it would be best to have only one person to make the decisions, a moderator of sorts. Someone who would be impartial to each team and who's goal it is to facilitate a safe, fun, and fair game of soccer. Sounds a lot like a referee doesn't it?
