Are we keeping score--a message from KDMSC President Stuart Killin

Are We Keeping Score? Over the past few weeks there have been discussions in the Media on keeping scores in Soccer. This has prompted a number of questions from Parents. So let me clear this up.  This season will be no different from all the previous Seasons. We will still keep scores from U8 – U20, we will have League Standings and End of Year Tournament Finals. And as always our U4 – U6 games will all tie at the score of the age group; 4-4, 5-5, and 6-6.

But where is this coming from?  There is an initiative as part of Long Term Player Development (LTPD) within Canadian Soccer Association to remove the Official registering of scores and League standings until U14. The reason being to allow Coaches and Players to focus on the development of skills within this player age group rather than focusing on winning. The bias being that keeping scores and standings and fostering skill development do not go hand in hand at this early stage.

KDMSC are in discussions with our District Soccer Association on this and have voiced our thoughts on the positive and negative aspects of this approach at Executive Meetings.

But this is not just for Soccer. This is being discussed for all sports and each Association is being asked to look at the same initiatives.

As things develop we will keep our Soccer Community informed.

Stuart Killin

President KDMSC
